Miracles Come Through Work—Putting Your Faith in Action

And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:28

In this chapter we will be looking at this one verse, but oh, what a powerful verse it is! I believe I could teach on it for a month.

The reason I am devoting an entire chapter to this one verse is because I want you to see and understand the very special gifts that the Lord has set in His Church, For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ (Eph. 4:12).

Each of these gifts represents an office or a work that is done by individual members of the Body of Christ. When a person fulfills his office or carries out his work well, he will be promoted by God (Luke 19:17), just as his hard work will bring him promotion in the world.

Work Brings Promotion

In the introduction to this book I told how I rose from salesman to executive in a manufacturing firm. I did that while still in my twenties, which is very unusual. I was able to do it for two reasons: 1) because I just happened to have great knowledge of that particular business, and 2) because I worked very hard. When you are good at something, people will promote you. When I was a teenager I worked for a supermarket chain. I went in two hours early every day to get my department cleaned up and ready for the day. The night watchman told the manager of the store about me, and the manager called me into the office and said to me, "Don't tell any of the other employees, but I'm going to give you a raise because you do such good work and keep your department so clean."

It wasn't long before the manager told the district supervisor about me. One day the supervisor called me into the office and said, "I know you're only nineteen or twenty years old, and it's against company policy to make anybody a store manager before the age of twenty-four, but I just want you to know that if you'll stay with us, I'll do everything I can to get you a manager's position as soon as possible."

That taught me a lesson. Early in life I learned that in the world, hard work brings promotion. I have since learned that the same is true in the Kingdom of God.

God Promotes Faithfulness

...He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 2 Corinthians 9:6

If you will work, God will promote you—even if you're not saved—because it's part of God's law to promote faithfulness.

One time I worked with a businessman, a sinner, who had started out with nothing, and in twelve years God had made him a millionaire. He told me, "You know, I have given a lot of money to God.
